ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the occupational hazards caused by three kinds of welding operations, and to provide data support for individual protection. Methods: In October 2020, the welding fumes, metal elements and welding arc generated by three welding operations of argon gas shielded welding (JS80 welding wire) , manual welding (ZS60A welding rod) and carbon dioxide shielded welding (907A flux cored wire) were collected and measured in the welding laboratory. The samples were analyze and compare in the laboratory, and the differences of the occupational hazard factors of the three welding operations were judged. Results: The concentration of welding fume produced by carbon dioxide shielded welding, manual welding (ZS60A electrode) , and argon gas shielded welding (JS80 welding wires) were 6.80 mg/m(3), 6.17 mg/m(3), and 3.13 mg/m(3), respectively. The effective irradiance of the welding arc outside the welding mask from high to low is manual welding (ZS60A electrode) , carbon dioxide shielded welding (907A flux-cored welding wire) , and argon shielded welding (JS80 welding wire) , respectively 1 010.7, 740.9, 589.5 μW/cm(2). The long-wave ultraviolet UVA intensity generated by argon shielded welding (JS80 welding wire) is the largest, which is 1 500 μW/cm(2). The content of Mn in the three welding operations is the highest, and JS80 welding wire has the highest Mn content of 128493.2 mg/kg. 907A flux cored wire has the highest Ti content, which is 24355.5mg/kg. The electrode ZS60A has the highest Cu content, which is 24422.12 mg/kg. Conclusion: The intensity of occupational hazards is different in the three kinds of welding operations, so the methods of personal protective equipment, field exposure assessment and health monitoring should be more targeted.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: We report two cases of intraocular lens (IOL) pupillary optic capture following IOL scleral fixation treated with argon laser iridotomy. CASE SUMMARY: (Case 1) A 69-year-old man presented with suddenly decreased visual acuity of the left eye. The best-corrected visual acuity was finger count (FC) 30 cm in the left eye. Slit lamp examination revealed subluxation of the left eye IOL. An IOL scleral fixation and anterior vitrectomy were performed and no specific findings were observed. During the follow-up period, pupillary optic capture was repeated without specific causes, such as trauma, or IOL decentration thus, argon laser iridotomy was performed. (Case 2) A 77-year-old man presented with a 3-day history of congestion of the left eye and decreased visual acuity. Best-corrected visual acuity was 0.4 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) in the left eye. Slit lamp examination revealed subluxation of the left eye IOL. An IOL scleral fixation and anterior vitrectomy were performed, and no specific findings were observed. During the follow-up period, pupillary optic capture was found, and IOL repositioning and argon laser iridotomy were performed. CONCLUSIONS: Laser iridotomy can be used to prevent recurrence of pupillary optic capture in eyes with IOL scleral fixation without decentration or distortion.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To report a case of central serous chorioretinopathy with peripapillary retinoschisis. CASE SUMMARY: A 64-year-old male presented with abnormal color vision of the left eye, which occurred 6 months prior to his visit. At the initial visit, a funduscopic examination revealed retinal elevation with suspected serous retinal detachment around the optic disc in the left eye. Spectral domain optical coherence tomography showed subretinal fluid on the nasal side of the optic disc and retinoschisis on the temporal side of the optic disc in the left eye. Fluorescein angiography revealed multiple leakages in the left eye. Indocyanine green angiography revealed choroidal vascular hyperpermeability in both eyes. Based on these results, the patient was diagnosed with chronic central serous chorioretinopathy and was treated with argon laser photocoagulation at the leakage points. After 8 weeks of laser therapy, optical coherence tomography indicated that there was no retinoschisis or subretinal fluid in the macula, nasal, or temporal sides of the optic disc. CONCLUSIONS: Peripapillary retinoschisis due to central serous chorioretinopathy improves with argon laser photocoagulation at leakage sites.

ABSTRACT

Objective: to evaluate the influence of surface treatment with non - thermal argon plasma (PLA) on bond strength of resin cements to enamel, dentin and lithium disilicate glass ceramic; and, to observe, through Fourier Transform Modified Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), the inorganic compounds and through gas chromatography, the alteration of the volatile organic compounds, on the enamel and dentin, under the experimental conditions. Material and Method: Three resin cements: Variolink Esthetic LC and N (Ivoclar Vivadent) and Panavia V5 (Kuraray) were evaluated. Twenty hundred and forty bovine teeth were used, among which 150 specimens with enamel surface exposure and 90 with dentine exposure. One hundred and fifty lithium disilicate glass ceramic slices (12 x 14 x 0.5 mm) were obtained. The groups were divided according to the substrate and surface treatment. The treatments for enamel and dentin surfaces were: EA (enamel / phosphoric acid); DA (dentin / phosphoric acid); EPS (enamel / PLA 30 s); EPM (enamel / PLA 1 min); DPS (dentin / PLA 30 s); EAPS (enamel / phosphoric acid / PLA 30 s) and EAPM (enamel / phosphoric acid / PLA 1 min); and, DAPS (dentin / phosphoric acid / PLA 30 s). The treatments for the ceramic surfaces were: CA (ceramic / hydrofluoric acid), CPS (ceramic / PLA 30 s); CPM (ceramic / PLA 1 min); CAPS (ceramic / hydrofluoric acid / PLA 30s) and CAPM (ceramic / hydrofluoric acid / PLA 1 min). After the treatments, resin cement cylinders (0.8 mm / 1.5 mm) were built on the substrate's surfaces. After 48 h storage bond strength tests (µSBS) were performed in a universal testing machine (10 Kgf / 1 mm / min) until failure to fracture, and failure mode was analyzed under a stereomicroscope. The treated surfaces and the adhesive interface were analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The FTIR was used to observe the spectra of enamel and dentin treated samples. Bond strength data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey test (5%). Results: for the enamel there was not a statistically significant difference among surface treatments; for the dentin, the DPS group presented the highest bond strength; and for the ceramic the AC treatment presented the highest values of bond strength. For the enamel and the dentin samples, the FTIR observations showed changes in water, carbonate and phosphate contents and the gas chromatography in the volatile organic substances. Conclusion: Surface treatment with PLA does not influence the bond strength of resin cements to the enamel, increases the bonding to dentin and decreases to the lithium disilicate. Observational analysis on FTIR suggest that non-thermal plasma does not alter enamel and dentin compounds(AU)

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Plasma activation of hydrophobic zirconia surfaces might be suitable to improve the bond strength of luting materials. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of nonthermal argon-plasma on the shear bond strength (SBS) between zirconia and different combinations of 10-MDP adhesive systems and luting composites after artificial aging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred forty Y-TZP specimens were ground automatically with 165 µm grit and water cooling. Half of the specimens received surface activation with nonthermal argon-plasma. The specimens were evenly distributed into three groups according to the adhesive systems ([Futurabond U, Futurabond M, Futurabond M + DCA], VOCO GmbH, Germany, Cuxhaven) and into further two subgroups according to the luting materials ([Bifix SE, Bifix QM], VOCO GmbH). Each specimen underwent artificial aging by thermocycling and water storage. SBS was measured in a universal testing machine. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA and Scheffè procedure with the level of significance set to 0.05. RESULTS: Surface activation with nonthermal plasma did not improve the bond strength between zirconia and the tested combinations of adhesive systems and luting materials. The plasma-activation trended to reveal higher bond strength if the self-etch luting material (Bifix SE) was used, irrespective of the adhesive system. CONCLUSION: Plasma-activation seems to be suitable to improve bond strength between zirconia and self-etch resin materials. However, further research is necessary to identify the influence of varying plasma-parameters.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Purpose: To compare the effectiveness of anal and perianal condylomata treatment using argon plasma and electrofulguration. Methods: From January 2013 to April 2014, 37 patients with anal and perianal condylomata, who had been diagnosed through proctological examination, oncotic cytology, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and histology, underwent treatment with argon plasma and electrofulguration. The perianal and anal regions were divided into two semicircles. Each semicircle was treated using one of the methods by means of simple randomization. Therapeutic sessions were repeated until all clinical signs of infection by HPV were eliminated. The patients were evaluated according to several variables like the genotype of HPV, HIV infection, oncological potential per genotype, oncotic cytology and histology. Results: Among all the variables studied, only immunosuppression due to HIV influenced the results, specifically when the fulguration method was used. There was no significant difference in effectiveness between argon and fulguration based on lesion relapse (p > 0.05). However, among HIV-positive patients, fulguration presented worse results, with a significant difference (p = 0.01). Conclusion: Regarding treatment of anal and perianal condylomata acuminata, comparison between applying fulguration and argon demonstrated that these methods were equivalent, but use of fulguration presented more relapses among HIV-positive patients.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the electrochemical characteristics of nanotubular Ti-25Nb-xZr ternary alloys for dental implant materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ti-25Nb-xZr alloys with different Zr contents (0, 3, 7, and 15 wt.%) were manufactured using commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti), niobium (Nb), and zirconium (Zr) (99.95 wt.% purity). The alloys were prepared by arc melting in argon (Ar) atmosphere. The Ti-25Nb-xZr alloys were homogenized in Ar atmosphere at 1,000℃ for 12 hours followed by quenching into ice water. The microstructure of the Ti-25Nb-xZr alloys was examined by a field emission scanning electron microscope. The phases in the alloys were identified by an X-ray diffractometer. The chemical composition of the nanotube-formed surfaces was determined by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Selforganized TiO₂ was prepared by electrochemical oxidation of the samples in a 1.0 M H₃PO₄+0.8 wt.% NaF electrolyte. The anodization potential was 30 V and time was 1 hour by DC supplier. Surface wettability was evaluated for both the metallographically polished and nanotube-formed surfaces using a contact-angle goniometer. The corrosion properties of the specimens were investigated using a 0.9 wt.% aqueous solution of NaCl at 36℃±5℃ using a potentiodynamic polarization test. RESULT: Needle-like structure of Ti-25Nb-xZr alloys was transform to equiaxed structure as Zr content increased. Nanotube formed on Ti-25Nb-xZr alloys show two sizes of nanotube structure. The diameters of the large tubes decreased and small tubes increased as Zr content increased. The lower contact angles for nanotube formed Ti-25NbxZr alloys surfaces showed compare to non-nanotube formed surface. The corrosion resistance of alloy increased as Zr content increased, and nanotube formed surface showed longer the passive regions compared to non-treatment surface. CONCLUSION: It is confirmed that corrosion resistance of alloy increased as Zr content increased, and nanotube formed surface has longer passive region compared to without treatment surface.

ABSTRACT

Gastric hemangioma in the neonatal period is a very rare cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. We present a case of hemangioma limited to the gastric cavity in a 10-day-old infant. A huge, erythematous mass with bleeding was observed on the lesser curvature side of the upper part of the stomach. Surgical resection was ruled out because the location of the lesion was too close to the gastroesophageal junction. Medical treatment with intravenous H₂ blockers, octreotide, packed red blood cell infusions, local epinephrine injection at the lesion site, application of hemoclip, and gel-form embolization of the left gastric artery did not significantly alter the transfusion requirement. Hemostasis was achieved with endoscopic argon plasma coagulation (APC). After two sessions of APC, complete removal of the lesion was achieved. APC was a simple, safe and effective tool for hemostasis and the ablation of gastric hemangioma without significant complications.

ABSTRACT

Gastric adenoma (dysplasia) is a precancerous lesion. Therefore, managements of gastric adenomas are important for preventing the development of gastric cancers and for detecting gastric cancers at earlier stages. The Vienna classification divides gastric adenomas into two categories: high-grade dysplasia and low-grade dysplasia. Generally, endoscopic resection is performed for adenoma with high-grade dysplasia due to the coexistence of carcinoma and the potential of progression to carcinomas. However, the treatments of adenoma with low-grade dysplasia remain controversial. Currently two treatment strategies for the low-grade type have been suggested; First is the ‘wait and see’ strategy; Second is endoscopic treatment (e.g., endoscopic mucosal resection, endoscopic submucosal dissection, or argon plasma coagulation). In this review, we discuss the current optimal strategies for endoscopic management of gastric adenoma.

ABSTRACT

The cases of non-curative endoscopic resection (NCR) of early gastric cancer have increased due to the widespread use of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). NCR is associated with augmenting chances of local recurrence and lymph node metastasis (LNM). Therefore, some additional treatment strategies after NCR are needed. Treatment strategies for NCR should be determined by considering the risk of residual tumor or local recurrence and LNM. Additional surgical treatment such as gastrectomy and lymph node dissection are recommended in patients who have high-risk of LNM. Close observation without additional treatment is considered for selected patients with a less possibility of local recurrence or LNM. Also it may be suggested if there is no or less benefit from surgery in elderly patients or patients with underlying diseases. Additional endoscopic procedures including ESD, endoscopic mucosal resection or argon coagulation therapy are suggested alternatively for highly selected patients not at risk of LNM based on the absolute or expanded criteria of ESD.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To date, the best therapeutic modality for gastric adenoma, especially low-grade adenoma, has not been established. The aim of this study was to assess the usefulness of argon plasma coagulation (APC) in treating gastric adenoma compared with endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). METHODS: We included 210 patients with gastric adenoma, who underwent treatment with either APC (97 patients) or ESD (113 patients). The clinical and pathologic characteristics, mean duration of hospital stay, complications, and recurrence rates between the two groups were compared. RESULTS: The mean adenoma size was 0.9 cm and 1.1 cm in the APC group and ESD group, respectively (p<0.001). The mean duration of hospital stay was significantly shorter in the APC group than in the ESD group (1.6 days vs. 5.8 days, p<0.001). Complications did not occur in the APC group. However, one case of perforation (0.9%) and 6 cases of bleeding (5.3%) occurred in the ESD group. The recurrence rates were 15.3% (15/97 patients) in the APC group and 3.5% (4/113 patients) in the ESD group (p=0.003). The proportion of hospitalization was less in the APC group (43.3%, 42/97) than in the ESD group (100.0%, 113/113) (p<0.001). Medical expense was less in the APC group (377,172 won) than in the ESD group (1,430,610 won) (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study suggest that APC is a safe treatment method for gastric adenoma without serious complications. However, regular endoscopic follow-up is necessary to detect any residual or recurrent lesions due to the relatively high rate of local recurrence after APC.

ABSTRACT

The argon plasma jet (Ar-PJ) is widely used in medical fields such as dermatology and dentistry, and it is considered a promising tool for cancer therapy. However, the in vivo effects of Ar-PJ for medical uses have not yet been investigated, and there are no biological tools to determine the appropriate clinical dosages of Ar-PJ. In this study, we used the caudal fin and embryo of zebrafish as novel in vivo tools to evaluate the biosafety of Ar-PJ. Typically, Ar-PJ is known to induce cell death in two-dimensional (2D) cell culture systems. By contrast, no detrimental effects of Ar-PJ were shown in our 3D zebrafish systems composed of 2D cells. The Ar-PJ-treated caudal fins grew by an average length of 0.7 mm, similar to the length of the normally regenerating fins. Remarkably, Ar-PJ did not affect the expression patterns of Wnt8a and β-Catenin, which play important roles in fin regeneration. In the embryo system, 85% of the Ar-PJ-treated embryos hatched, and the lateral length of these embryos was ~3.3 mm, which are equivalent to the lengths of normal embryos. In particular, vasculogenesis, which is the main cellular process during tissue regeneration and embryogenesis, occurred normally under the Ar-PJ dose used in this study. Therefore, our biosafety evaluation tools that use living model systems can be used to provide an experimental guideline to determine the clinically safe dosage of Ar-PJ.

ABSTRACT

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm of the bile duct (IPMN-B) is frequently found and has recently been recognized as a precancerous lesion leading to invasive carcinoma characterized by papillary growth of the ductal epithelium with rich mucin production and cystic dilatation of the hepatic duct. Surgical resection is the treatment of choice to avoid malignant transformation. Despite a growing number of studies on IPMN-B, there are few reports of its treatment aside from surgery. A 75-year-old woman was incidentally diagnosed as IPMN-B. Considering the patient's age, comorbidity, and preference, we recommended an argon plasma coagulation (APC) as local ablation therapy rather than surgical resection. There was no evidence of remnant tumor on percutaneous transhepatic cholangioscopy 4 weeks after the ablation of tumor mass by using APC. We report a rare case of IPMN-B successfully treated with APC.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate changes in subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) and macular thickness as measured by enhanced depth imaging spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) after argon laser panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) in patients with severe diabetic retinopathy. METHODS: This prospective, comparative case series included 21 patients (28 eyes) with severe diabetic retinopathy. All patients underwent three sessions of PRP. The SFCT and macular thickness were measured using EDI-OCT at baseline and one week after completion of 3 sessions of PRP. RESULTS: SFCT before PRP was 318.1±96.5 µm and increased to 349.9±108.3 µm; P=0.001 after PRP. Macular thickness significantly increased at one week after PRP from 273.1±23.9 µm at baseline 295.8±25.3 µm at one week; (P<0.001). No significant relationship between the changes in macular thickness and SFCT was observed (r=−0.13, P=0.52). CONCLUSION: PRP induced increases in both SFCT and macular thickness. Changes in SFCT did not correlate with changes in macular thickness.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Studies have been showing a decrease of bond strength in dentin treated with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of non-thermal argon plasma on the bond strength of a self-etch adhesive system to dentin exposed to NaOCl. Thirty-two flat dentin surfaces of bovine incisors were immersed in 2.5% NaOCl for 30 min to simulate the irrigation step during endodontic treatment. The specimens were divided into four groups (n=8), according to the surface treatment: Control (without plasma treatment), AR15 (argon plasma for 15 s), AR30 (argon plasma for 30 s) and AR45 (argon plasma for 45 s). For microtensile bond strength test, 5 specimens were used per group. In each group, the specimens were hybridized with a self-etch adhesive system (Clearfil SE Bond) and resin composite buildups were constructed. After 48 h of water storage, specimens were sectioned into sticks (5 per tooth, 25 per group) and subjected to microtensile bond strength test (μTBS) until failure, evaluating failure mode. Three specimens per group were analyzed under FTIR spectroscopy to verify the chemical modifications produced in dentin. μTBS data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tamhane tests (p<0.05). AR30 showed the highest μTBS (20.86±9.0). AR15 (13.81±6.4) and AR45 (11.51±6.8) were statistically similar to control (13.67±8.1). FTIR spectroscopy showed that argon plasma treatment produced chemical modifications in dentin. In conclusion, non-thermal argon plasma treatment for 30 s produced chemical changes in dentin and improved the μTBs of Clearfil SE Bond to NaOCl-treated dentin.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of argon plasma on dentin surface after use of 6% NaOCl. Sixty bovine incisors had their crowns removed, the roots split, and the segments planed. One hundred twenty segments of the cervical third were used. The samples were divided in two groups (n=60): Control group: immersed in 6% NaOCl, washed, dried and then immersed in 17% EDTA, washed and dried and Argon group: after treatment described for the Control group, non-thermal argon plasma was applied for 30 s. Ten samples were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy in each group. Other ten samples were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Thirty samples were analyzed with a goniometer to measure the contact angle between the dentin surfaces and solutions, to determine the surface free energy. The last ten samples were used to evaluate the wettability of AH Plus sealer. Data were statistically analyzed using Kruskal Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests (p<0.05). The results of this study showed that argon plasma did not modify the surface topography. FTIR analysis showed chemical modifications after plasma treatment. Argon plasma increased the surface free energy of dentin and AH Plus wettability. In conclusion, argon plasma treatment modified chemically the dentin surface. This treatment increased the surface free energy and wettability of an epoxy resin root canal sealer, favoring its bonding to dentin surfaces.

ABSTRACT

In the implant prosthetic procedure, the soft tissue reaction was varied with the material and surface treatment of the abutment. It may be the cause of the peri-implantitis, and hence it can affect the long-term prognosis of the implant prosthesis. Titania and zirconia abutment presented superior biocompatibility and stable soft tissue reaction, while gold alloy abutment showed unfavorable reaction sometimes. A soft tissue reaction can be differed by the surface characteristics even in the same material type. Because rougher surface induces a bacterial attachment, the part contacting a soft tissue should have smooth surface. Additional surface treatment can enhance the cellular response without increasing bacterial attachment. Repeated removal and insertion of the abutment and the shape of the abutment may affect the soft tissue reaction, also. Ultrasonic cleaning and argon plasma cleaning are effective way to clean the retained micro-dust on the customized abutment.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Plasma technology has the potential to improve the adherence of fibers to polymeric matrices, and there are prospects for its application in dentistry to reinforce the dental particulate composite. Objectives This study aimed to investigate the effect of oxygen or argon plasma treatment on polyethylene fibers. Material and Methods Connect, Construct, InFibra, and InFibra treated with oxygen or argon plasma were topographically evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and chemically by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). For bending analysis, one indirect composite (Signum) was reinforced with polyethylene fiber (Connect, Construct, or InFibra). The InFibra fiber was subjected to three different treatments: (1) single application of silane, (2) oxygen or argon plasma for 1 or 3 min, (3) oxygen or argon plasma and subsequent application of silane. The samples (25x2x2 mm), 6 unreinforced and 60 reinforced with fibers, were subjected to three-point loading tests to obtain their flexural strength and deflection. The results were statistically analyzed with ANOVA and the Bonferroni correction for multiple comparison tests. Results SEM analysis showed that oxygen and argon plasma treatments promote roughness on the polyethylene fiber surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis shows that both plasmas were effective in incorporating oxygenated functional groups. Argon or oxygen plasma treatment affected the flexural strength and deflection of a fiber reinforced composite. The application of silane does not promote an increase in the flexural strength of the reinforced composites. Conclusions Oxygen and argon plasma treatments were effective in incorporating oxygenated functional groups and surface roughness. The highest strength values were obtained in the group reinforced with polyethylene fibers treated with oxygen plasma for 3 min.
